What is ZuluAlpha?
ZuluAlpha (Pty) Ltd operates a private 1,381 ha telescope and ground-station hosting facility near Sutherland in South Africa’s Northern Cape. We provide secure infrastructure for remotely operated telescopes, astrophotography systems, optical ground stations, satellite-tracking sensors and related space-domain-awareness instruments. Our first client system has been installed, with additional shared and private hosting infrastructure under development.
Why Sutherland?
Sutherland offers some of the finest astronomical conditions in the Southern Hemisphere, with exceptionally dark Bortle 1 skies, low atmospheric moisture and approximately 270 usable imaging nights per year. ZuluAlpha is situated about 15 km from the Southern African Large Telescope and benefits from the same protected dark-sky environment that has made the region South Africa’s principal optical astronomy location. The ZuluAlpha site is approximately 1,570 metres above sea level.
When will the site be operational?
ZuluAlpha is already operational and our first client system has been installed. The access road, secure telescope compound, solar-power system and core security infrastructure are complete. Construction of the shared roll-off-roof observatory is under way and remains on track for completion around September or October 2026. Dedicated fibre connectivity is also being installed. Private telescope enclosures and specialist ground-station infrastructure can be developed according to individual client requirements.
How many clear nights can I expect?
Long-term conditions around Sutherland indicate approximately 270 usable imaging nights per year. Not every usable night will necessarily be completely cloudless for the entire night, but the dry Karoo climate provides excellent year-round imaging opportunities. ZuluAlpha is beginning long-term on-site monitoring of sky brightness, weather and imaging conditions now that the first client system has been installed.
What types of systems can you host?
ZuluAlpha can accommodate a wide range of systems, including compact smart telescopes, advanced amateur and professional astrophotography rigs, research telescopes, optical ground stations, satellite-tracking cameras, space-domain-awareness systems and RF ground stations. Our shared roll-off-roof facility accommodates systems with swing diameters from 82 cm to 240 cm. Larger telescopes, private enclosures and antenna installations of up to approximately 12 metres can be accommodated through customised infrastructure. Pricing & Contracts
How much does it cost?
Shared roll-off-roof hosting starts at US$99 per month: Compact, up to 82 cm swing diameter: US$99 per month Small, up to 120 cm: US$199 per month Standard, up to 150 cm: US$299 per month Heavy, up to 240 cm: US$699 per month Hosting includes the allocated space, core power and network connectivity, security, environmental monitoring and routine facility maintenance. Annual prepayment provides 12 months of hosting for the price of 11. Private enclosures, ground stations, dedicated connectivity, increased power capacity and managed-support services are quoted according to the client’s requirements.
Is there a reservation or installation fee?
A reservation deposit equal to one month’s hosting fee is required to secure a shared-observatory space and installation window. The deposit is separate from installation charges. Installation and commissioning costs depend on the complexity of the equipment and will be confirmed before work begins. Any refundable deposit balance is handled in accordance with our cancellation and refund policy, including the applicable processing fee and any outstanding charges
What contract lengths do you offer?
Shared telescope hosting is available on monthly or annual terms. Clients who prepay annually receive 12 months of hosting for the price of 11. Longer-term agreements are available for private observatories, ground stations and clients investing in dedicated infrastructure. These agreements can include customised power, connectivity, support and service-level provisions.
Site infrastructure
How is the facility powered?
ZuluAlpha operates a substantial solar-and-battery power system designed for remote, unattended operation. The completed installation comprises: A 33.6 kWp solar array using 56 × 600 W bifacial panels A 50 kW Sunsynk high-voltage hybrid inverter 122.88 kWh of battery storage across two high-voltage battery banks Integrated generator backup Remote power monitoring and management Dedicated surge protection and earthing Individually protected circuits for hosted systems This provides reliable power for the shared observatory and core site infrastructure, with additional or dedicated capacity available for private observatories, optical ground stations and other high-power installations.
What about internet connectivity?
Dedicated fibre connectivity is being installed, with the initial service operating at 100 Mbps. The connection can be upgraded to multi-gigabit capacity, including 10 Gbps or higher, according to client requirements. LTE connectivity provides backup and failover during upstream outages. Dedicated bandwidth, static IP addresses, client subnets, secure VLANs and other enterprise networking services are available by quotation.
How secure is my equipment?
ZuluAlpha’s secure telescope compound and primary security infrastructure are complete. Security includes: A fenced and access-controlled core compound Monitored CCTV coverage Controlled vehicle and personnel access On-site security presence Remote environmental and infrastructure monitoring Individually protected electrical circuits Automated weather protection for the shared observatory once commissioned Access to the site is restricted to authorised staff, contractors and clients visiting by prior arrangement.
Shipping & installation
Where do I ship my hardware?
Shipping instructions are provided once your reservation and equipment list have been confirmed. Equipment can be received through our Cape Town logistics arrangements or delivered directly to the Sutherland site by prior arrangement. Please coordinate all shipments with ZuluAlpha before dispatch so that we can plan receiving, storage, customs support and installation.
What must I send?
Clients normally supply the telescope, mount, cameras, control computer or controller, power supplies and all system-specific cables and accessories. ZuluAlpha provides the allocated pier or hosting position, facility power, network connectivity and core observatory infrastructure. We can also assist with sourcing equipment, adapter plates, computers, networking components and other installation requirements where agreed. A complete equipment list should be supplied before shipping so that we can confirm compatibility and identify any additional components required.
Do you handle customs clearance?
ZuluAlpha can coordinate with experienced freight and customs agents and assist with the documentation required to bring equipment into South Africa. Unless otherwise agreed, the client remains the importer of record and is responsible for import duties, VAT, customs charges and regulatory requirements. We can also discuss procurement through ZuluAlpha where a single locally issued invoice would be more convenient.
How long does installation take?
A conventional single-telescope system can normally be installed, balanced, polar-aligned, connected and tested within approximately two weeks of arrival, subject to equipment completeness, weather and technician availability. Complex systems, multi-instrument installations and equipment requiring custom fabrication may take longer. The proposed installation process and expected timeline will be agreed with the client beforehand.
Technical support & maintenance
Is on-site support available 24/7?
The facility and critical infrastructure are monitored continuously. Routine technical support is provided during South African business hours, with after-hours and 24/7 support available through the appropriate support plan or service-level agreement. Automated systems manage weather-related closures and critical facility protection. Commercial, research and ground-station clients can contract enhanced response times and 24/7 operational support.
What does “standard maintenance” cover?
Hosting includes routine facility monitoring and basic preventative checks. Client-specific remote hands and technical work are billed according to the current rate card: Basic remote hands, including visual inspections, power cycles and cable checks: US$40 per hour Technical remote hands, including configuration and diagnostics: US$80 per hour Engineering, advanced maintenance and infrastructure work: charged through support credits or quoted as a project Work outside standard business hours and on public holidays is charged at the applicable support-credit rate. Wherever practicable, billable work is discussed and approved before it begins.
Can I visit the site?
Yes. Clients and prospective clients may visit ZuluAlpha by prior arrangement. Because the property is a private operational site, unscheduled public access cannot be accommodated. Please contact us in advance so that we can arrange access and ensure that an appropriate team member is available.
Environmental & regulatory matters
Are you within the Astronomy Geographic Advantage (AGA) zone?
The ZuluAlpha site falls within the Sutherland Central Astronomy Advantage Area, which provides important protections for optical astronomy through controls on external lighting and activities that could increase dust or interfere with observing conditions. The site is outside the Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Area applicable to the primary radio-astronomy protection zone.
Are we affected by KCAA radio-quiet rules?
The Sutherland site is outside the Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Area. However, radio-frequency installations remain subject to applicable ICASA licensing, equipment approval and national telecommunications requirements. ZuluAlpha will review each installation’s proposed frequencies and operational requirements before it is accepted.
What does SCAAA actually require?
The principal requirements relate to limiting artificial light and controlling dust-generating activities that could affect optical astronomy. ZuluAlpha uses suitable external lighting, access controls and construction practices designed to comply with the protected astronomical environment. Project-specific requirements will be reviewed during planning.
Do you have an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)?
Yes. ZuluAlpha has received final Environmental Authorisation for the development of its telescope and ground-station hosting facility near Sutherland. The environmental assessment and public-participation process was completed without material objections, and development is proceeding in accordance with the conditions of the authorisation and other applicable municipal and astronomy-protection requirements. Do receive-only installs need a spectrum licence?
Licensing depends on the equipment, frequency band, service type and whether the system only receives or also transmits. Some receive-only equipment may be exempt, while other installations may require registration, type approval or spectrum authorisation. The client remains responsible for obtaining the required approvals. ZuluAlpha can assist with local coordination and recommend appropriate regulatory specialists.
Can we apply once for S, X, Ku, K and Ka?
Multiple frequency bands can be included within a coordinated application, but ICASA may assess and authorise each band or frequency assignment separately. Clients should provide the complete technical parameters for every proposed band. ZuluAlpha can assist with preparing site information and coordinating local regulatory support.
What documents will ICASA expect?
Requirements depend on the particular service and frequency band but may include: Applicant and company information Requested frequencies and bandwidth Antenna specifications Transmit power and EIRP Site coordinates Satellite or network details Equipment type-approval information Supporting technical diagrams Proof of payment of applicable fees Final requirements should be confirmed directly with ICASA or an appropriately qualified licensing specialist.
Will ZuluAlpha submit and “own” the licence for us?
Unless specifically agreed otherwise, the client remains the licence applicant and licence holder. ZuluAlpha can supply site documentation, review technical information and coordinate assistance from South African regulatory specialists. Any arrangement under which ZuluAlpha applies for or holds a licence would require a separate written agreement.
Insurance & liability
Do I need to insure my telescope?
Yes. Clients are responsible for arranging suitable insurance for their equipment, including transit, theft, accidental damage, electrical damage and environmental risks. ZuluAlpha maintains security and resilient infrastructure and exercises reasonable care when handling client equipment, but facility insurance does not automatically cover third-party equipment.
What happens if my system is damaged by weather or power failure?
ZuluAlpha uses monitored power, battery storage, generator backup, surge protection and automated weather-safety systems to reduce operational risk. Clients nevertheless remain responsible for insuring their equipment. Liability, service interruptions and force-majeure events are governed by the applicable hosting agreement and website terms.
Future development
How many pads will you offer?
The shared roll-off-roof observatory will provide multiple hosting positions across the Compact, Small, Standard and Heavy categories. Capacity will be expanded in response to demand. The wider 1,381 ha property can also accommodate private telescope enclosures, research instruments and dedicated ground-station installations outside the shared facility.
Will you offer turn-key telescope packages?
Yes. ZuluAlpha can assist clients with selecting, sourcing, importing, assembling and commissioning complete remote telescope systems. Turnkey packages are quoted according to the client’s scientific or imaging goals, preferred equipment and hosting category. Clients may also ship existing equipment for installation at the site.
Can I reserve time on a ZuluAlpha-owned telescope instead of hosting my own?
Telescope time and shared-instrument services are not currently part of our standard hosting offering. These services may be introduced as the facility and equipment base expand.
